October winter storm 2011: Snow hits New York before Halloween on East Coast

  • Earliest New York City one-inch snowfall predicted since the Civil War
  • Snowstorms already hitting Massachusetts and New England
  • 10,000 people without power in Pennsylvania, Maryland and West Virginia
  • Parts of Connecticut could get a foot of snow this weekend
  • Since record keeping began NYC has never had an inch of snow in October

New York has today been hit by snowfall before Halloween for only the fourth time since the Civil War.

The North East is bracing for a chilling weekend as 60 million people are expected to experience a rare October snowstorm, which will unleash heavy, wet snow and wind.

New England has already been struck by a very early snowfall and 10,000 residents in Pennsylvania, Maryland and West Virginia were today without power after snow, according to AccuWeather.com.

This weekend looks set to see huge amounts of sleet and snow covering the North East, invariably causing power outages and travel chaos. Some areas bracing for up to a foot of snow.

Low pressure will track up the East Coast on Saturday possibly bringing significant amounts of the white stuff across the tri-state area, Pennsylvania and New England.

New York has received measurable snow before Halloween only three times since 1869 - and never more than one inch, which is what some experts are predicting.

Likely to see the most snow will be the Massachusetts Berkshires, the Litchfield Hills in northwestern Connecticut, southwestern New Hampshire and the southern Green Mountains.

In Connecticut, Governor Dannel P. Malloy warned residents that they could lose power due to the anticipated wet, heavy snow.

It would be the earliest one-inch snowfall in the city since the Civil War.

The heaviest snows are expected between 5pm and 8pm Saturday night, although the temperatures could bring light snow throughout the night.

The storm is expected to come hard and fast, with the heaviest snow set for the Virginia and West Virginia border through eastern Pennsylvania and southeastern New York state, northwestern New Jersey, northern Connecticut, Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire.

Naturally, areas of high altitude will be the most treacherous.

Travel chaos is likely, with downed trees a very likely hazard and cars liable to skid on frozen roads.

In New England, where six inches of snow has already fallen, there is also expected to be powerful winds which could be very dangerous - bringing down trees and power lines.

Temperatures in the 30s and 40s and wind chills in the 20s will make it feel like winter has truly arrived.

Forecasters at weather.com say the heaviest amounts of snow will fall in parts of Pennsylvania, northern New Jersey, upstate New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts.

These areas could see between two to four inches late on Saturday.

Weather.com said: 'Precipitation will start as rain in these locations, but may change over to snow. How quickly this occurs and how much snow falls is dependent on the availability of enough cold air, which is difficult to forecast early in the season.'

Early season snows, when the leaves are still on the trees, are notorious for causing tree damage and power outages and this storm will be no exception.

The biggest impact from the weekend's storm will not come from snow accumulation, but from the rain and melted snow freezing on bridges and overpasses.

Sunday morning could be particularly treacherous on the roads.

Overnight freeze warnings are in effect across the north east region.

Lows in the 20s will effectively bring the agricultural growing season to an end, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Surface temperature is a factor in accumulations.

It's been a warm October so far in much of the north east, so any falling wet snow that hits the pavement could melt soon after contact. If snow rates are heavy enough, then the warm ground obstacle to accumulations would be overcome.

Trick or treaters most likely will not be treading the white stuff on Monday.

The forecast for the country is mostly dry, though a few disturbances could bring some showers to parts of Pennsylvania and upstate New York.

National Weather Service meteorologist Bill Simpson said you would won't need to go out and buy roof rakes, but October snowfall records could be broken in parts of southern New England, especially at higher elevations.

The October record for southern New England is 7.5 inches in Worcester in 1979, the Associated Press reports.

The most snow will likely hit the Massachusetts Berkshires, the Litchfield Hills in northwestern Connecticut, and south western New Hampshire, he said.

Connecticut Gov Dannel P. Malloy warned residents that they could lose power.

The storm could bring more than six inches of snow to parts of Maine beginning Saturday night.
In Pennsylvania, six to 10 inches could fall at higher elevations, including the Laurel Highlands in the south western part of the state and the Pocono Mountains in the north eastern part.
Philadelphia and Pittsburgh could see a coating.

John LaCorte, a National Weather Service meteorologist in State College, Pennsylvania, said: 'This is very, very unusual. It has all the look and feel of a classic midwinter nor'easter. It's going to be very dangerous.'

The last major widespread snowstorm in Pennsylvania this early was in 1972, Mr LaCorte said.
In New England, the first measurable snow usually falls in early December, and normal highs for late October are in the mid-50s.

Miss Lund said that after last winter's record snowfall, which left a 12-foot snow bank outside her house, she'd been hoping for a reprieve.

The good news, Mr Simpson said, is that relatively warm water temperatures along the Atlantic seaboard would keep the snowfall totals much lower along the coast and in cities such as Boston.

Temperatures should return to the mid-50s by midweek.

'You can't get any correlation from a two-day event.'

Not everyone is lamenting the arrival of winter. Dan Patrylak, 79, of Glastonbury, had just moved back to New England from Arizona and was picking up two new ice scrapers for his car.
He said he was looking forward to seeing snow on the ground again.

'In Phoenix, it's 113 all summer long,' he said. 'So, it just depends on where you are and what the weather is and you learn to accept that. Whatever it is, I'm going to be ready for it.'

Nancy Grace Wardrobe Malfunction Is A Shame

Nancy Grace nip slip brings complaint

Nancy Grace Wardrobe Malfunction

Some viewers complain to FCC about Nancy Grace's wardrobe malfunction on "Dancing With the Stars."

Remember Nancy Grace’s nip slip? We’ve been trying to erase it from our brains for weeks, but it keeps popping back, as indelible as the flaming Hindenburg.

Apparently a lot of people who watched Grace on “Dancing With the Stars” come undone on that fateful night felt the same way. Her right areola’s accidental boogaloo has prompted some deeply traumatized viewers to file indecency complaints with the Federal Communications Commission.

Nancy Grace's nipple slip on "Dancing With the Stars" has resulted in a formal complaint to the FCC.

Nancy Grace's nipple slip on "Dancing With the Stars" has resulted in a formal complaint to the FCC.

“Nancy Grace had a wardrobe malfunction where her nipple private came out and scared my children. She should be fined,” wrote a concerned and whimsically literary parent from Arlington, Va. Then the offended mom let it rip: “SHE WAS JUMPING AROUND DANCING WITH HER BREASTS OUT, SHE KNEW IT COULD HAPPEN. FINE HER.”

Poor Hester – oops, we mean Nancy. Perhaps she should take her talents to Argentina. We hear that one contestant got completely naked on an episode of that nation’s version of “DWTS.”
On second thought, stay right here at home, Nancy. Please.

Nancy Grace’s 2nd Wardrobe Malfunction — Her Pants Fell Down!

As if her nip slip wasn’t enough, Nancy Grace lost her pants during rehearsal last week for ‘Dancing with the Stars!’ How embarrassing!

Nancy Grace seems so together as a talking head on television, however, she’s quite a barrel of laughs on Dancing with the Stars. First, there was nipplegate; then there was fartgate — and now…PANTSGATE! The 52-year-old TV personality blogged about rehearsing a handstand last week with her partner, Tristan MacManus, and said she had another wardrobe malfunction.

“First try in rehearsals, he dropped me on my head and pulled my pants off,” she wrote. “Good times! I am still speechless that we pulled it off and got our first 9 of the season all in the same night!”

HollywoodLife.com chatted with our DWTS insider, who said Nancy got bashful after the incident.

“It was really embarrassing for a second,” our source dished. “But later we couldn’t stop laughing about it all. It’s a continuous joke and has made her dance even better because she doesn’t want that to happen on TV.”

Nancy isn’t the strongest performer on the show, but she’s improving every week. Do you think she’ll last much longer? Who are YOU pulling for this season on Dancing with the Stars?

Infamous Celebrity Sex Scandals You May Never Forget

Celebrity sex scandals always seem to make the front page of the newspapers and keep the public's interest for years. Some celebrity sex scandals help the celebrity's career, while other celebrity sex scandals can bring a career to its knees. See how many of these celebrity sex scandals you remember.

Pee Wee Herman.

Pee Wee Herman was a popular entertainment figure with children and adults. He had made several movies and had his own television show before his own celebrity sex scandal brought his career to a halt. In July of 1991, Pee Wee Herman (whose real name is Paul Reubens) was arrested for public indecency in a Florida adult movie theater. At first, the police did not realize who Reubens was. But when they figured it out, Pee Wee Herman made headlines for all of the wrong reasons.

Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee.

In 1995, Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee were one of the most famous couples in Hollywood. When their celebrity sex scandal broke in the form of a sex tape, their popularity only increased. Initially, Pamela and Tommy sued the company that was distributing the adult video. But the two parties eventually reached an agreement and the tape has gone on to be one of the most popular pornography movies ever sold.

Tiger Woods.

During the Thanksgiving season of 2009, Tiger Woods made headlines for a car crash he was involved in outside his home. The car crash, as it turns out, was the result of an argument between himself and his now ex-wife Elin about Tiger's extra-marital affairs. In the end, it was discovered that Tiger had affairs with over a dozen different women while he was married. He lost almost all of his sponsorships and had to take a one-year leave from professional golf to regroup his life.

R. Kelly.

In 2002, R&B singer R. Kelly was arrested for appearing in a pornographic video tape that showed the singer having sex with an underaged girl and then urinating on her. The trial lasted for years until Kelly was finally acquitted in 2008.

Paris Hilton.

One of the most famous celebrity sex scandals of all time happened in 2000 when Paris Hilton, the heiress to the Hilton hotel group family fortune, was featured in a sex tape that was leaked to the internet. That first tape was only one in a series of at least two other videos and a host of graphic pictures that Hilton was featured in. Hilton parlayed her infamy into roles in television shows and major motion pictures.

PROOF the TEABAGGERS are RACIST, VIOLENT, and DISGUSTING

First, something for the spooky Monday: -

Foreclosure Law Firm Takes Piss out Of Homeless At Halloween

lawyers Foreclosure Law Firm Takes Piss out Of Homeless At Halloween

FORGET the bankers. It’s the lawyers you want to go for, 99%-ers. Joe Nocera has a peace headlined “What the Costumes Reveal“:

On Friday, the law firm of Steven J. Baum threw a Halloween party. The firm, which is located near Buffalo, is what is commonly referred to as a “foreclosure mill” firm, meaning it represents banks and mortgage servicers as they attempt to foreclose on homeowners and evict them from their homes. Steven J. Baum is, in fact, the largest such firm in New York; it represents virtually all the giant mortgage lenders, including Citigroup, JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America and Wells Fargo.

The party is the firm’s big annual bash. Employees wear Halloween costumes to the office, where they party until around noon, and then return to work, still in costume. I can’t tell you how people dressed for this year’s party, but I can tell you about last year’s.

That’s because a former employee of Steven J. Baum recently sent me snapshots of last year’s party. In an e-mail, she said that she wanted me to see them because they showed an appalling lack of compassion toward the homeowners — invariably poor and down on their luck — that the Baum firm had brought foreclosure proceedings against.

PROOF the TEABAGGERS are RACIST, VIOLENT, and DISGUSTING

For the last few years, the point has been expressed on this blog, as well as others, that the tebaggers are a violent, racist, and disgusting mob intent on transforming our society into something completely alien to our progressive democracy. While we've all known this to be the case despite a lack of evidence, these last few weeks of vile teabagger demonstrations have provided all the evidence needed to put the question to rest and exxpose the baggers for what they truly are. Warning, this diary contains some offensive material.

RACISM

And I'm not just talking about oblivious color-blind white privilege. I'm talking about about a movement so racist the Nazi Party has given their endorsement. Oh, I know, these groups try to be provocative and they also endorsed Obama in '08. But they also explain their support. While the Nazis felt that Obama was a fool who would ruin African American's chances at ever being elected to high office again, their support for the Teabaggers was explained as support of their pervasive, blatant anti-semetism

I could make a post a mile long with example after example, but you can click over to YouTube and watch the related videos yourself. The point is that it is pervasive and undeniable. Whether the Nazi's support is appreciated or not, it is the Teabagger's similar racist philosophy that enamours them. All of our probems are because we still have Joooooooos walking around that Hitler didn't kill. Disgusting. If this does't destroy the Teabagger movement I don't know what will.

As a side note, the Communist Party has also given their endorsement. While Communists are certainly responsible for more deaths and misery than the Nazis could ever dream of, at least their intentions were good, so I'll give them a pass.

VIOLENCE

The Teabagger violence has gotten out of control. We've called them "political terrorists" for some time now, but I think it's time to just refer to them as "terrorists". After all, some of their leaders are being investigated for terrorism. They claim an area for themselves (typical Teabagger greed), refuse to pay for a permit, threaten to kill reporters, block traffic, attack the police, and conspire to kill police. Does the first amendment nullify all other laws? WTF? Rightfully, the NYPD plans to sue the Teabaggers as a whole for their injuries from now on.

Violence, violence, violence, violence, violence and I could go on but you get the point. There are over 100 such unique (unrelated, I'm sure) incidents involving upwards of 1000 arrests. We are being terrorized by the Teabaggers.

And of course, Teabagger violence isn't limited to their opponents- they turn on each other. Such people can't help themselves, it's their nature. We all know the Teabagger's natural inclination to violence toward women. We've been seeing a disturbing trend of rape lately- here, here and here for starters. The Teabaggers have issued a cult-like decree that their rape victims should remain silent about their abuse. The truly disgusting thing is that this violence is so pervasive rapes can go on WITHIN THE GROUP OF TENTS WITH NOBODY TRYING TO STOP IT. That is who the teabaggers are. If you're a man and you don't hate the Teabaggers right now, then you're not much of a man at all. Real men don't tolerate violence toward women. Real men don't tolerate Teabaggers.

Another one of the unfortunate side-effects of Teabagger violence is the drain on our precious public resources, namely the police protecting the women from Teabaggers who aren't demonstrating. All told, the human cost of teabagger violence is incalculable.

DOOKIE

It is my belief that the reason the Teabaggers are so unsanitary, covered in feces, vomit, and urine is because they are naturally anti-science. They deny that human waste and garbage poses health threats. They don't accept modern waste management. Many of them were taught from the Christian Bible that people were created by god, and so their turds are actually divine.

And really, this just makes the case for better public education. We need to invest more in the teachers who can correct the backwards Teabagger hygiene and give these kids a shot at a healthy life. You can't just poo anywhere in this country. It's not healthy and it's not fair to others. We have places to poo. These children need to learn where or we have no chance as a nation.

More and more city governments are attempting to address the sanitation issue, but are finding they must deal with the violence issue first.

If you are ever near a group of Teabaggers head for the nearest shower and wash yourself immediately. It is reccomended that you dispose of your clothing in a manner consistent with biohazard regulations.

IN CLOSING

I hope what I've provided here will be used as a reference. The next time some Rethuglikkkan tells you "the tea party isn't racist", or "we're just law-abiding people who love the constitution", now you have the undeniable PROOF to show them what the Teabaggers truly are. Not ony is their movement disgusting, but they are just a disgusting group of people no matter how they're organized.

No longer can the media hide the truth from us. Surely there will be many more examples of my points here in days to come. Eventually, the weight of the evidence will be too much and the Teabaggers will go the way of the KKK and the Nazis.

Now let's get out there and expose them.

Jimmy Savile dead: DJ and Jim'll Fix It presenter dies at home aged 84

  • Fellow DJ Dave Lee Travis pays tribute to Savile, 'a powerful presence'
  • 'No suspicious circumstances surrounding death' say police

Sir Jimmy Savile has died at his home aged 84.

The former presenter, most famous for his show Jim'll Fix It, passed away at his home in Roundhay, Leeds.

Sir Jimmy was just two days away from his 85th birthday.

It is not known how Sir Jimmy died but it is believed there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: 'Police were called at 12.10pm today to the discovery of a man's body at a house in Roundhay, Leeds.

'The body of a man in his 80s was found at the property. There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.'

James Savile was born in Leeds on Halloween in 1926, the seventh child ('I was the "not again!" child') of Vincent, a bookmaker's clerk, and Agnes, the woman he always called the Duchess.

He almost died from pneumonia when just five months old but miraculously recovered after his mother went out to the local church to pray to a deceased Scottish nun.

He again narrowly escaped death as a teenager in his first job when working as a miner.

An underground explosion brought down the coal face on his back damaging his spine to such an extent that he was told he would never walk again. But he proved the doctors wrong when he threw his sticks away just three years later.

He raised staggering amounts for charity — his accountant lost track after £40million — much of it for patients with spinal injuries.

Sir Jimmy claimed to have set up the world's first disco in Leeds in 1948.

His work in the dance-halls was eventually spotted and he was asked to move on to radio where he rapidly acquired national fame, first with Radio Luxembourg and then with BBC Radio 1.

He later competed as a semi-professional sportsman, taking part in the 1951 Tour of Britain cycle race and a professional wrestler. He fought 107 bouts, lost 100 and won just seven, insisting it was never fixed.

Talking about his sporting past, Sir Jimmy once said: 'If you look at the athletics of it, I've done over 300 professional bike races, 212 marathons and 107 pro fights.

'No wrestler wanted to go back home and say a long-haired disc jockey had put him down. So from start to finish I got a good hiding. I've broken every bone in my body. I loved it.'

In 1964, Sir Jimmy presented the very first edition of Top Of The Pops from a television studio in Manchester. He was then invited to present the last episode of the BBC show in 2006.

In the 1970s he started a 20-year run as host of Jim'll Fix It, working miracles for more than 1,500 children.

Among the more famous fix-its was the time when he arranged for an unknown 11-year-old called Nigel Kennedy to perform on television. Kennedy then went on to become one of the world's most celebrated violinists.

During his time in the television and radio industries, Sir Jimmy became famous for catchphrases including 'How's about that, then?', 'Now then, now then, now then', 'Goodness gracious', and 'Guys and gals'.

Sir Jimmy was known for his distinctive appearance, which included a tracksuit or shell suit and gold jewellery, and was frequently spoofed by comedians including Mike Yarwood.

Sir Jimmy's earnings were substantial and he owned at least eight homes, including flats in Regent's Park, Bournemouth, Leeds and Scarborough. Among his six cars were a Bentley Turbo, a Mercedes 500 SL and a flashy Rolls-Royce.

He was a paid consultant to travel agent Thomas Cook and charged a minimum of £10,000 for personal appearances.

He became a regular visitor to Kensington Palace, Buckingham Palace, and Highgrove and was used as an intermediary in an attempt to resolve the differences between the Prince and Princess of Wales shortly before their split.

Asked why he was invited so often by the Royal family, he once said: 'Royalty are surrounded by people who don't know how to deal with it. I have a freshness of approach which they obviously find to their liking. I think I get invited because I have a natural good fun way of going on and we have a laugh. They don't get too many laughs.'

Satirist Chris Morris targeted him in 1994 by announcing on Radio 1 that the presenter had died and broadcasting his obituary. Legal action was threatened and apology issued.

Arsenal Put Five Past Chelsea: Wenger Exposes Villa-Boas’ Failings: Photos

funny old gam 300x193 Arsenal Put Five Past Chelsea: Wenger Exposes Villa Boas Failings: PhotosARSENAL beat Chelsea 5-3 and all is right in Arsene Wenger’s wonderland. The question is this: which manager would you rather have: Wenger or Andre Villas-Boas?

After the match the manager’s spoke:

Andre Villas-Boas:

”Has the situation affected John? No, not at all. It hasn’t distracted him at all, I don’t think. For me, it was never a situation. It’s a misunderstanding. This is just defeat for a team, a very important defeat and nothing else. The decisive moment might have been when Mata was free on goal and misses the chance to go 4-3 ahead. We’ve seen some great open games recently between the top teams and this is one more. We will have to reflect on the mistakes we made and there are a couple of things we can improve, but the commitment and desire is there. We must evolve. It’s a loss against a big team picking up form. It’s two defeats in a row and we have to get things right.”

Arsene Wenger:

“It was fantastic to watch. Both teams went for it. In the second half I felt we were completely dominating the game and created chance after chance. Overall, we have shown quality and mental strength as well. To go 2-1 down and come out the way we did shows great resolve in the team. I thought we looked fragile in defence in the first half but we looked dangerous going forward. We achieved the target of winning a big game away from home and did it with style, but we have to keep our feet on the ground and focus on another big game on Tuesday. That’s the football we want to play, you always think you can get rid of the defensive mistakes we had in the first half.”

X Factor: ‘Sick’ Kelly Rowland And ‘Mean’ Tulisa Contostavlos Dehumanise Misha Bryan

x factor tulisa kelly X Factor: Sick Kelly Rowland And Mean Tulisa Contostavlos Dehumanise Misha BryanNEWS that Kelly Rowland will not feature on the X Factorthis weekend is said to be rooted in her “row” over the show’s designated “bully” Misha Bryan, who was said to “mean” by fantasy happy-slapper Tulisa Contostavlos.

Now news recahes us that Roland, the Destiny’s Child singer, has a throat infection and would not be able fly back to the UK for the ITV show.

A statement informs the world:

“Kelly is devastated she won’t be here for this weekend’s show. She is extremely ill with a viral throat infection and her doctors aren’t permitting her to fly. Kelly will be returning to the show as soon as she has recovered. The girls have been in touch to wish her a speedy recovery and they can’t wait for her to get back. More news as we have it.”

Kelly is so ill that she struggles to pick up a phone to talk to the Sun, the X Factor’s in-house magazine:

“I was on the plane and I got this weird scratchy feeling in my throat. As the flight went on it got worse and worse. I was drinking orange juice and taking vitamins but, by the time I landed, I couldn’t swallow. The doctor said that whatever I had was extremely rare. The infection is really low down in my throat. I’ve been on a drip, had injections of antibiotics and been drinking water non-stop. I even had a cortisone (steroid) shot.”

The Sun’s Colin Robertson assures us:

Last night Kelly’s personal doctor confirmed her condition is rare.

Even their sore throats are better than yours.

The Daily Mail puts it another way:

X Factor in crisis: Kelly Rowland to miss weekend shows after bust-up with Tulisa.

The Mirror relays Tulisa’s words:

“Than what you see on air, Kelly hasn’t actually spoken to me backstage. We are not speaking. At the end of the day it is a competition and I’m getting on with it. I’m mature enough to take it on the chin. She can talk to me and we can sort it out, but if she doesn’t want to sort it out, we don’t have to talk. I’ll just get on with it. If we don’t speak anymore it’s because she doesn’t want to speak to me. I don’t feel I have to make the first move or apologise because I have done nothing wrong.”

And on it goes, the PR-driven, joyless singing show that features little actual singing and turns even the favourite to win, Misha Bryan, into a dehumanised vehicle for the judges to ride on. All we get is Kelly Rowland Versus Tulisa, just as we have been dished up Dannii Minogue V Cheryl Cole, and Dannii V Sharon Osbourne.

As ever, the X Factor presents famous women as bitchy, unhappy and argumentative.

It is utterly depressing.

More children in care after Baby P scandal

More children in care after Baby P scandal

The number of children in care in the Black Country and Staffordshire is on the up following the Baby P scandal.

Councils are being forced to take more youngsters away from their parents due to changes brought in following the case. Wolverhampton City Council has had to put another £4 million into next year’s budget to cope.

The number of children being looked after by the authority has risen from 355 in 2009 to more than 530 by July this year.

In Sandwell the number of children in council care rose from 477 in 2009 to 579 in 2011, while in Walsall the number increased from 463 in 2009 to 518 by March 2011. It is now down to 491.

Councillor Rachel Andrew, who is in charge of the borough’s children’s services, said the decrease was down to more preventative work with families identified as being at risk.
