SUNLAND PARK — A troubled New Mexico border city, plagued by state police raids of its offices and a recent sex video scandal, is now the target of a special state audit.
The Las Cruces Sun-News reports that New Mexico State Auditor Hector Balderas said Thursday he has launched an audit of Sunland Park's finances after the county district attorney's office asked for help.
He said the audit could result in a recommendation to Gov. Susana Martinez's administration to take control of the city.
The audit comes amid a string of scandals for Sunland Park, including the release of a secret video of a mayoral candidate receiving a lap dance that the candidate says was a set up by an opponent.
Balderas said the announcement was not connected to the election.
