The victim of an unthinkable act of violence in Miami this past weekend has been identified as graphic images emerged of his injuries.

Police say that Ronald Poppo, a 65-year-old area man, was viciously attacked by Rudy Eugene, 31, on Saturday, May 26, 2012
in the shadow of The Miami Herald's headquarters.

Mr Poppo's attacker was killed at the scene after he refused to stop feasting on Mr Poppo's flesh, growling at officers after they demanded he stop.

Police believe both Eugene and Mr Poppo were homeless.

Mr Poppo is currently recovering from the attack in Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center in a serious condition suffering from 'some of the worst injuries staff had ever encountered'.

CBS reports that officials now believe a highly potent drug called 'bath salts' is to blame for the attack.

Emergency room doctors at Jackson Memorial Hospital said they have seen an increase in incidents related to the drug, which is referred to on the street as 'the news LSD.'

'We noticed an increase probably after Ultra Fest,' said emergency room Dr. Paul Adams, at Jackson Memorial Hospital to CBS.

When people take bath salts, Dr Adams said, their temperature rises to an extremely high level, causing them to rip off their clothes and become aggressive in a state of extreme delirium.

Some have been known to use their jaws as a weapon of attack, Dr Adams said, and they become 'extremely strong.'

'I took care of a 150 pound individual who you would have thought he was 250 pounds,' Dr. Adams said to CBS.

'It took six security officers to restrain the individual.'

Dr Adams said that the new drug is not only a danger to those who take it, but also emergency responders who must restrain the drug-addled abusers of it.

'It's dangerous for the police, Dr Adams said.

'It's dangerous for the fire fighters. It's dangerous for the hospital workers taking care of them because they come in, they have to be restrained both chemically and physically and you're asking for someone to get hurt.'

He added that as the body toll of this new trend of drug rises, the drug dealers that push it will be held liable for the attacks.

But as more information comes out regarding what may have caused Eugene to attack Mr Poppo, images of the victim's face reveal the extent of the damage.

Images of Mr Poppo as well as the attack were released by Gawker, showing most of the victim's face removed.

The Miami Herald reports that Mr Poppo has been homeless for some time, at least since 1983, and has a long history of arrests.

He was arrested at least 24 times since 1978, mostly for drinking in public and trespassing, but also a handful of felony arrests for burglary, assault and resisting arrest.

Friends and family of Eugene have come forward claiming that the North Miami Beach High School graduate 'was not a face-eating zombie monster.'

'The Rudy we know was a nice gentleman with a warm smile and funny. He's not like that at all,' former classmate Victoria Forte told The Miami Herald. 'We are going to do our part as his friends to not let him go down like this.'

Long-time friend Cassandra Metayer said that Eugene was the son of Haitain immigrants and he grew up in Miami Beach.

He played football and married Ms Metayer's cousin Jenny Ductant in 2005, but divorced two years later.

She added that Eugene worked in customer service.

However, the couple's divorce records, obtained by The Miami Herald, show that he had no income.

'I don't want to talk about it,' Ms Ductant said Tuesday when reached by phone.

Ms Metayer said Eugene wasn't known to use drugs or have mental problems.

Florida Department of Law Enforcement records show Eugene was arrested a number of times in the past few years, once for battery, trespassing, and four times for marijuana related charges.

A cyclist described the terrifying moment he witnessed a naked man tear pieces of flesh from another man's face at the side of a freeway before being shot dead by police when he refused to stop.

Larry Vega, from Miami, was cycling off the MacArthur Causeway on Saturday afternoon when he saw the savage attack, which he described as 'the most gruesome, traumatic thing I have ever seen in my life'.

He told WSVN: 'The guy was like tearing him to pieces with his mouth and I told him to get off. But the guy just kept eating the other guy away, like ripping his skin.

'A police officer came over, told him several times to get off then climbed over the divider and got in front of him and said, "Get off!" But the guy just stood his head up like that with a piece of flesh in his mouth and growled.'

Mr Vega said Eugene continued to eat his victim's face so he was shot repeatedly.

Images taken from a Miami Herald surveillance camera show the legs of the two men lying beneath a freeway underpass.

Mr Vega described the crime scene - which he compared to a horror movie: 'It was just a blob of blood. You couldn't really see, it was just blood all over the place.

'It was one of the most gruesome things I have ever seen in my life in person. You know, you see these things in the movies but when you see it in person, it's pretty traumatic.'

Armando Aguilar of the Miami Fraternal Order of Police told WSVN: 'What's happening is whenever we see that a person has taken all of his clothes off and has become violent, it's indicative of this excited delirium that's caused by overdose of drugs.

'What's happening is inside their body their organs are burning up alive.'

A woman notified a police officer nearby that she had seen two men fighting, witnesses told The Miami Herald.

In the barrage of gunfire, the naked man was killed, collapsing face-down on the pedestrian walkway right by the Herald's parking garage.

Javier Ortiz, a police spokesman, said that based on information he's received, the officer who fired the shots 'is a hero and saved a life'.

There were no weapons found near the two naked men, leading them to believe that the attacker used his own strength to subdue his victim.

'There are other ways to injure people,' Sergeant Altarr William told The Herald.

'Some people know martial arts, others are very strong and can kill you with their hands.'

MacArthur Causeway is a major route that connects downtown Miami to popular South Beach.

Traffic clogged the area for hours as people used the route to descend into South Beach for Urban Beach Week, an annual festival dedicated to hip-hop music.

Arianny Celeste Mugshot After Arrest Not as Cute as Expected

UFC ring girl Arianny Celeste illustrated the proper and sane method of taking a mug shot.

TMZ obtained the mugshot of the model, and it's pretty much how I would look if I were ever taken into custody. Well, if I also had the face of a model, I mean.

Per the report, Celeste was arrested on Saturday morning in Nevada on suspicion of domestic violence. UFC President Dana White has since come forward to back Celeste, via the report.

Arianny is our baby. She has been with us for over five years. She is a good girl and an amazing ambassador for UFC. I don't know all the details of what happened but we have her back and support her 100%.

Fox News 5 in Las Vegas has a bit more from the incident, reporting the fight was a "booze-fueled" altercation with her boyfriend that lead to a trashed room at Wynn Las Vegas.

The alleged boyfriend, 34-year-old Praveen Chandra, was also taken into custody and charged with domestic violence.

Per the report:

Police said the fight started in a limo on the way to Wynn Las Vegas, when Celeste took Chandra's phone and accused him of sending text messages to other women.

Chandra claimed Celeste kicked him in the nose, and Celeste accused Chandra of choking her and squeezing her arm in their hotel room.

It sounds like a scary few moments that will soon be answered for. Of course, we are used to seeing Celeste rocking a bright smile and captivating audiences with her form.

We have seen far too many celebs who are about to be incarcerated rocking a grin.

I know I would be in a pretty sour mood if I was on my way to jail. Celeste is obviously emotionally bothered in this picture, pretty much what you would expect.

The Smoking Gun has a huge collection of celebrity mug shots that include some fairly famous individuals looking like their mug shot is a natural part of their day.

There is nothing lighthearted about domestic abuse, no matter who is doing the alleged fighting, but it's clear that Celeste is beyond affected by this matter.

We certainly hope this is the last time we see her mixed up on this kind of awfulness. Perhaps it's time these two distance themselves for good.

Chagas disease: 'New AIDS of the Americas' can cause victims' hearts to explode

By Daily Mail Reporter

|

A little-known illness caused by blood sucking insects has been labelled the 'new AIDS of the Americas' by experts.

The parasitic illness called Chagas Disease has similarities to the early spread of HIV, according to a new study.

Similar to AIDS, Chagas is difficult to detect and it can take years for symptoms to emerge, according to experts writing in the journal PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases.

The new AIDS? A parasitic illness called Chagas disease has been dubbed the 'new AIDS of the Americas' by experts

An estimated 8 million people are infected with most sufferers in Bolivia, Mexico, Columbia and Central America, as well as approximately 30,000 people in the U.S., reported the New York Times.

Chagas commonly affects people in poverty-stricken areas and most U.S. cases are found in immigrants.

If caught early enough, the disease can be cured with an intense 3-month drug treatment. However, because of the lengthy incubation period, Chagas is often left untreated.

asdf

Victim: Charles Darwin may have contracted the disease as he travelled the globe on HMS Beagle in his 20s

Also known as the American trypanosomiasis, the disease spreads easily either through blood transfusions or from mother to child.

Chagas is usually transmitted from the bite of blood-sucking insects that release a parasite called Trypanosoma cruzi into the person's bloodstream.

The parasite can eventually make its way to the heart, where it can live and multiply.

About a quarter of the people who contract Chagas, develop enlarged heart or intestines that can burst causing sudden death.

Although the drugs available are not as expensive as those for AIDS, there are shortages of the medication in poorer countries and little money is being spent on discovering new treatments.

Researchers from the University of Maryland School of Medicine said last year that they believed Charles Darwin suffered from three different illnesses, including a Chagas infection.

The experts believe he contracted the disease during a five-year trip around the globe on the HMS Beagle in his 20s – and attributed it to his death of heart failure 47 years later.

The father of modern life scientists wrote in his journal that he had been bitten by a 'wingless black bug' during the expedition, where he visited South America.

Sex scandal: ‘I don’t give crap (excuses)’

VIDEO INSIDE

(Free Malaysia Today) - Unlike others, MCA president Dr Chua Soi Lek says that he does not dish out excuses such as 'my stomach is smaller than what is seen in the video'.

A scandal often nails the coffin shut on a political career and few are able to rise above the dirt and re-invent themselves.

In Malaysia, where scandals are bountiful, one such political resurrection happened in the form of MCA president Dr Chua Soi Lek.

His rivals' secret filming of his bedroom romp may have dealt his reputation a blow but his honest admission and political acumen ensured that he returned to the pinnacle of power.

More than four years have passed since that sordid DVD revelation compelled Chua to resign as health minister, the MP for Labis and MCA vice-president, casting him into political wilderness.

But the trained psychologist, who believes that the impossible is possible, refused to be defeated even when expelled from MCA and clawed his way back to the top, with the mandate of party members.

However, the father of three's moral transgression continues to haunt him and provides fodder for his political opponents.

In cyberspace, whenever an article quoting him is published, the comments from readers will contain a string of unflattering remarks, including references to a particular sexual stimulant, about the MCA president with regard to the scandal.

But the seasoned politician has learned to take all of this in his stride.

Chua: I don't hide

And when FMT popped the scandalous question during an exclusive interview yesterday, Chua who appeared accustomed to such queries responded in a flash.

In defending himself, the MCA president craftily launched a veiled attack on Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim, whose alleged sexual exploits with a Chinese prostitute was also captured on DVD.

He also made references to the infamous Lingam video on the fixing of judicial appointments.

Asked to what extent the scandal had affected him on the political front and its implications on MCA, Chua replied: I don't know. But I know that I don't hide. I don't say that 'it looks like me, sounds like me but it's not me'."

And in an obvious swipe at Anwar over his denials regarding the alleged sex video attributed to him, the MCA president continued: "I don't go around saying that my stomach is smaller than what is in the video. I didn't say that I have hidden my watch because I gave it to my wife."

"I don't do all those things. I said that it's me. I made a mistake, I'll apologise and I'll go off. I hold on to the principle that I prefer to be defeated by the people at the ballot box rather than shameless, nameless people that tape your secret life. That is my final mental principle," he stressed.

Secret Service politics: Several say they didn’t break the rules - Washington Post

Four Secret Service employees have decided to fight their dismissals for engaging in inappropriate conduct in Colombia last month, a development that could unravel what has been a swift and tidy resolution to an embarrassing scandal over agents' hiring of prostitutes.

The agents are arguing that the agency is making them scapegoats for behavior that the Secret Service has long tolerated, a charge that Director Mark Sullivan may have to address when he appears before a Senate committee Wednesday. He has not spoken in public about the controversy, but according to his prepared testimony, he plans to tell Congress that there was no breach of operational security.

Several of the implicated agents have told associates that the facts of what happened in Cartagena differ from initial media accounts describing a group outing of a dozen men in search of prostitutes. Instead, the men went to different bars and clubs and met women under a variety of circumstances, in some cases resulting in voluntary trysts that did not involve money.

One 29-year-old field agent assigned to the Washington office, who is single and who resigned under the threat of being fired, told investigators in a polygraph examination that he did not think at the time that the two women he brought back to his hotel room were prostitutes. He is among those seeking to overturn their dismissals, according to three people familiar with his case.

The scandal has badly damaged the Secret Service's reputation, and the fallout has spread to other federal agencies. A dozen members of the military also are accused of hiring prostitutes on the trip, and the Drug Enforcement Administration is looking into allegations, made by a Secret Service agent during the investigation, that DEA members had previously brought prostitutes to their apartments in Cartagena.

According to interviews with multiple former and current employees and people briefed on the inquiry, the Secret Service agents involved brought women to their hotel rooms without hesitation. The agency says it was clear that employees should not do anything unbecoming of a Secret Service employee. Current and former agency employees say sexual encounters during official travel had been condoned under an unwritten code that allows what happens on the road to stay there.

They also contend that this tolerance is part of the "Secret Circus" — a mocking nickname that some employees use to describe what ensues when large numbers of agents and officers arrive in a city.

Shortly after landing in Cartagena at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 11, the 55 or so Secret Service members had down time to explore the Caribbean resort. They were there to provide extra security for Obama's visit for an international summit but had two days before the commander in chief arrived. In Cartagena, prostitution is legal in designated "tolerance zones."

Secret Service supervisor David Chaney, 48, had spent two decades with the agency and was among the most senior on the plane. He headed out that night to a strip club called the Pley Club, with junior agents in tow, according to two people with knowledge of the events.

Radioactive bluefin tuna is found off the California coast after Fukushima

  • Pacific tuna has radiation levels 10 times higher than normal
  • Radioactivity has remained in system on 6,000-mile swim from Japan to U.S.
  • Scientists claim fish should still be safe for people to eat as radiation remains below legal limit

By Daily Mail Reporter

|

If your muscles start swelling to superhero proportions after your next sushi meal, this might be why.

Researchers from Stony Brook University in New York have discovered bluefin tuna are carrying radioactive contamination leaked from Japan's crippled nuclear plant all the way across the Pacific to the United States, 6,000 miles away.

This is the first time a huge migrating fish has been shown to carry radioactivity such a distance, as they generally metabolise the contamination during their journey.

Radioactive: Scientists said the increased radiation found in the Pacific bluefin tuna came from Japan's Fukushima nuclear plant that was crippled by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami

Nuclear: The Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant, pictured, was badly damaged in the 2011 earthquake and tsunami leading to a higher level of contamination in tuna

Nuclear: The Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant, pictured, was badly damaged in the 2011 earthquake and tsunami leading to a higher level of contamination in tuna

'We were frankly kind of startled,' said researcher Nicholas Fisher, who reported the findings on Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The levels of contamination were 10 times higher than the amount measured in tuna off the California coast in previous years.

But even so, it's still far below safe-to-eat limits set by the U.S. and Japanese governments, so is unlikely to affect humans.

Since the March 2011 earthquake and subsequent tsunami that badly damaged the Fukushima Dai-ichi reactors, smaller fish and plankton have been found with elevated levels of radiation in Japanese waters.

But scientists did not expect the nuclear fallout to linger in huge fish such as bluefin tuna, which grow to 10 feet and weigh over 1,000 pounds.

This is because they generally shed radioactive substances easily, metabolising it as they sail the world.

HOW RADIOACTIVE ISOTOPES MAKE THEIR WAY INTO YOUR SUSHI

The tuna captured off the California coast were contaminated with radioactive material from the Fukushima meltdown of March last year.

When an earthquake and tsunami struck Japan, they overwhelmed the defences of the Dai-Ichi power plant, leading to the worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl.

Dangerous amounts of radioactive material were carried by wind away from the plant, which is just 30 miles from the Pacific Ocean.

When those substances - such as isotopes caesium-134 and caesium-137 - entered the water, they also entered the food chain and living environment of fish such as tuna.

The face that the radioactive caesium has stayed in the tuna's system a year later, even after a 6,000-mile swim across the ocean, shows just how much of the isotope was released by the meltdown.

While scientists claim that the fish is currently safe to eat, many of the effects of radioactivity on the human body are still unknown.

Five months after the Fukushima disaster, Fisher and his team decided to test Pacific bluefin, that spawn off the coast of Japan and swim east to California and Mexico.

To their surprise, tissue samples from all 15 tuna captured off the San Diego coast contained levels of two radioactive substances - caesium-134 and caesium-137 - that were higher than in previous catches.

The scientists also analysed yellowfin tuna, found in the eastern Pacific, and bluefin that migrated to Southern California before the nuclear crisis, to rule out any other causes for the enhanced radiation, such as ocean currents.

They found no trace of caesium-134 and only background levels of caesium-137 left over from nuclear weapons testing in the 1960s.

The results 'are unequivocal. Fukushima was the source,' said Ken Buesseler of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.

Bluefin tuna absorbed radioactive caesium from swimming in contaminated waters and feeding on contaminated prey such as krill and squid, the scientists said.

As the predators made the journey east, they shed some of the radiation through metabolism and as they grew larger. Even so, they weren't able to completely flush out all the radioactivity from their system.

'That's a big ocean. To swim across it and still retain these radionuclides is pretty amazing,' Fisher said.

Pacific bluefin tuna are prized in Japan where a thin slice of the tender red meat prepared as sushi can fetch $ 24 per piece at top Tokyo restaurants.

Japan consumes 80 per cent of the world's Pacific and Atlantic bluefin tuna.

But researchers say the real test of how radioactivity affects tuna populations comes this summer when they plan to repeat the study with a larger number of samples.

Bluefin tuna that journeyed last year were exposed to radiation for about a month but the upcoming travelers have been swimming in radioactive waters for a longer period.

They are also keen to track the movements of other migratory species including sea turtles, sharks and seabirds, now they know bluefin tuna can transport radiation.
